The 486 has a hollowed out Honduras Mahogany body with a block left standing under the bridge. This guitar is based on one of Spalt's first designs, dating back to the mid-90s. The top is laminated flame Maple with a Macassar Ebony overlay. The top wood is oiled. This gives a wonderful tactile and visual surface. It will need to be wiped if the player has sweaty hands though or it will show smudges. The back is lightly lacquered in nitrocellulose. Starting in 2007, Scott Walker and Steve Kimock began discussing the ergonomics of a guitar. How does it sit in your lap? How does it hang on your shoulder? How do the strings present themselves? They came up with the current design. They then began looking at the construction, starting at the neck joint. They looked at bolt on features and took them further by adding an hidden, extended tennon. This gives perfect alignment, stability and tone transfer.
