The Fat Jimmy Colonel 50 is a tribute to the vintage Marshall world. This amp is inspired from the very early Marshall Blues Breaker style circuitry, considered by many to be the Holy Grail of Marshall circuits. These circuits have a classic cathode follower stage in the preamp which delivers unparalleled touch sensitivity, response, and articulation. 2 x EL34 power tubes delivers approx 50 watts of power.
The Colonel 50 has a little something special that crosses borders between the Fender and Marshall worlds. You get all of the famous Marshall sound and overdrive (think AC/DC rhythm), but you also get beautiful chimy cleans typically associated with Fender circuits! Â
This is one powerful and versatile head in a compact and lightweight package!
Fat Jimmy uses a solid state rectifier (in plug form) to deliver the maximum power from this head. Because they use a plug in a tube socket, the option of using a tube rectifier is there. You can sub in a 5AR4 rectifier tube, re-bias, and you're ready to go with a little less power.
Vintage Marshall players have been very impressed by the Colonel 50. As with most Fat Jimmy circuits, the player gets what they expect and demand from their vintage amp genre (Marshall in this case), but you also get a lot more.
