A modern classic with deep vintage roots
The Retrograde 277 Baritone is a masterfully handcrafted instrument that blends the soul of Leo Fender’s pre-CBS designs with forward-thinking innovations for today’s players. Built entirely by luthier Mark Grant in his Northern California workshop, the Retrograde 277 features a 27.7” scale length, thermally treated alder body, birdseye maple neck, and a luxurious cocobolo fretboard. Every detail is thoughtfully considered: bone nut, pre-CBS–style clay dot markers, ultra-thin vintage-style nitrocellulose lacquer, and a precision-cut 3-ply mint pickguard with wide bevel.
At its core lies a unique nodal neck joint, inspired by Scott Walker’s design, where the neck extends under the pickups to the rear of the bridge pickup. This innovation delivers unmatched resonance, harmonic complexity, and effortless upper fret access. Combined with its carefully balanced ergonomics, the Retrograde 277 is supremely playable — comfortable in the hands and inspiring to the ear.
MG90 pickups, cold-rolled steel bridge with brass saddles, and top-tier electronics (VIPots, CRL 3-way switch, NOS paper-in-oil capacitor, Switchcraft jack) round out its tone-rich foundation. Like the original instruments of the 1950s and ’60s, the Retrograde 277 is crafted without CNC machines, relying instead on a pin router and traditional techniques to shape its personality and feel.
As Grant explains: “These guitars are more than just objects—they’re the result of a process, a lineage, and a connection to the craftsmen of the past. The Retrograde series is my way of honoring that heritage while adding my own chapter to the story.”
